He advises not to be drawn into comment or controversy, and hoping that his ‘services are called upon in the better days that must surely lie ahead’ (11 Feb 1972); a wide range of people from military, academic and community backgrounds, as well as work colleagues, write to Maurice regretting the circumstances that forced his to decide to resign.

Includes typescript of paper on the roles of the Ministry of Community Relations and the Community Relations Commission (Jan 1972); letter from Basil McIvor, Minister for Community Relations to Maurice Hayes, Chairman of the Community Relations Commission, begins by saying that he was glad that there was clarity between the Ministry and the Commission in relation to their respective viewpoints, but commenting that there was nothing to change his mind from his decision set out in his letter of 3rd December.
