Fitzpatrick rejects Hayes' suggestion to go to a solicitor over the matter, stating that he knows 'Keenan is a broken-down merchant but why not give him a further chance to redeem himself?' Fitzpatrick had organised a dance which saw £50 raised toward the purchase of the pipes, but adds that 'we did not fully understand his terms as we do now'.
