The thesis states that a comprehensive survey of Irish coastal promontory forts has never been properly carried out, that 'a full and detailed survey of these monuments must be undertaken and completed before on can hope to advance theories concerning their function, date or origin,' and that coastal erosion endangers many of these sites.
