Handwritten draft (in blocks of foolscap and loose leaves) of a memoir by [Brendan Duddy] entitled 'Hunger Strikes', sectioned into parts 1 to 5. Providing personal view of Northern Irish politics, with particular focus on the hunger strikes of 1981, and Duddy's personal involvement in the dialogue between the British government and the Provisional IRA. Desultory approach to events, shot through with personal opinions, and character sketches, in proper memoir style. With some marginal notes. (Many with marginal comments and headings by Éamonn Downey.) 1st part. Events 1972 - 1986. Reflections on character of Northern Irish; reflections on his own role; comments on PIRA members Billy McKee, Séamus Twomey, Secretary of State Roy Mason; comments on the Catholic church, the prison service. 2nd part. Events early 1981 - July 1981. Particular assessment of Sands and his defiance of the Provisional movement; detailed treatment of meeting bringing about the prisoners' statement of 4 July, and following impasse.
