Scope and content

The Hall-Black letters are a set of 26 letters written by John Hall, his sister Maggie Black, and her husband Lytle Black between 1889 and 1891. Letters are written to family and friends both in America and in Ireland (counties Tyrone and Armagh). John Hall wrote his letters from McDonald, Pennsylvania; the Blacks from Chicago.
The series contains multiple versions of Kerby A. Millers typed letter transcripts, reproductions of the letters provided by PRONI; biographical notes on the family; excerpts from published histories of Chicago and of Washington County, Pennsylvania used for research context; and correspondence between Miller and researcher John B. Jentz which mentions attempted research on Lytle Black.
