Scope and content
The George Valentine letters are a set of three letters sent by George Valentine, an Irish Quaker who left Dublin with his family in 1818 to 'get out of the reach of Popish Inquisition'. The letters document the Valentines' journey from Philadelphia to their eventual home of Cincinnati. The last letter reveals that George's brother, recipient of the letters, also intends to emigrate with his own family.
The series includes reproductions of the letters and copies of Dwight L. Smith’s 1959 article ‘Some Irish Quakers Come to Cincinnati’ which contains transcripts of the letters.
