Scope and content
Materials pertaining to 102 letters written by or to members of the Flanagan family. The Flanagan brothers, Michael and Patrick, were natives of Tubbertoby, County Louth who emigrated to the goldfields of New Zealand and Australia in the 1860s. By 1870, the brothers were in California, and by 1872 had established themselves on a ranch in the Napa Valley where they were joined by another brother, Nicholas. The Flanagans established a large fruit farm on the ranch. Michael Flanagan returned to Ireland in 1890 to look after the family there while the other Flanagans remained in California and eventually became involved in the burgeoning wine industry in the region. The series includes transcripts and reproductions of the Flanagan letters, Kerby A. Miller's research notes and correspondence, census and genealogical research, and printed and oral Flanagan family histories.
