Archival history

Patrick Finnerty, son of the recipient of the Finnerty letters, donated photocopies of the letters to Dr. Arnold Schrier, future collaborator of Kerby A. Miller, on 7 July 1955. Miller later obtained alternate photocopies from the National Library of Ireland, where the original manuscripts had been deposited, on 25 July 1973, from which he created the transcripts. The original manuscripts are held in the National Library of Ireland [call number MS 8347].
Timothy O'Sullivan of Lixnaw, County Kerry donated the O’Sullivan letter to Dr. Arnold Schrier per letter of 1 July 1955. Schrier transferred the letter to his collaborator, Kerby A. Miller, per letter of 25 April 1989.

Scope and content

Transcripts and reproductions of four letters, three of which were written by emigrant P.J. Finnerty to his brother in Dublin between the 1860s and 1877. A fourth letter written in the wake of the San Francisco earthquake, originally identified in 1973 by Kerby A. Miller as being by 'Kate Finnerty' and part of this donation, was later ascribed to Katie O'Sullivan [see P155/52/2/1]. Also included is 1955 correspondence between Dr. Arnold Schrier and letter donor Patrick Finnerty.
