Letter from Ralph Grey, Naunton, to Maurice Hayes congratulating him on his appointment as Ombudsman (18 June 1987); Letter from Bertie [Ahern], Taoiseach to Maurice Hayes, thanking him for his work on the Patten Commission. He comments that ‘the personal insights and skills that you brought to the work of the Commission, were vital ingredients in the production of the remarkable document …’ (11 Sept 1999); pre-publication copy of article for comments from Eunan O’Halpin, ‘Intelligence and Anglo-Irish relations, 1922-1973’ (2006); Eunan O’Halpin, ‘The British Joint Intelligence Committee and Ireland, 1965-1972’, Institute for International Integration Studies (2007); Letter from K.P. Bloomfield to Maurice Hayes on the future of the Old Gael Complex, Downpatrick, commenting that if it were to be maintained then parking would be an issue (22 Feb 1980); Copy letter from M N Hayes to Donal O Morain, Chairman RTE, complaining about items he read in the “Sunday World” and “Hibernia”, commenting that he found them incredibly embarrassing and that there seemed to be no sense of confidentiality. ‘I would write at greater length if I could be assured that my letter would not figure in the gossip column” (7 Apr 1975), many others congratulating on his retirement from social services, also a number from academics.
