Scope and content

  • Correspondence between professors Arnold Schrier and Kerby A. Miller created while researching James Patton and his Irish background [James Lynn Patton (1690 or 1692 – 30 July 1755), an Irish-born (likely Donegal) merchant, pioneer frontiersman, and soldier who settled parts of Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. Between his immigration to Virginia in 1740, and his death there in 1755, he was a prominent figure in the exploration, settlement, governance, and military leadership of the colony];
  • unrelated correspondence regarding the memoir of Manny Steen (P155/14/3/1);
  • transcripts of 1730s and 1740s correspondence by and to James Patton, Patton’s will and testament, and other Patton related information provided by the Filson Club, Louisville, Kentucky;
  • photocopied excerpt of Mabel C. Weaks, ed. (1915), The Preston and Virginia Papers (Madison: State Historical Society of Wisconsin), describing the papers of Irish emigrant and American Revolutionary War militiaman William Preston, and Miller’s associated research notes;
  • negative reproductions of various letters held on microfilm in the Western Historical Manuscript Collection, University of Missouri-Columbia.
