Scope and content
A group of letters entitled 'Pilcher Correspondence' [see the back of P57/125] detailing a dispute in early 1895 between Peter Freyer and J G Pilcher, the Inspector General of Civil Hospitals, NWP and Oudh. Freyer was acting as civil surgeon in Benares in Jan 1895 but on the return of Dr Cameron to Benares on 1 Feb 1895 for a period of 2 months to qualify for a higher pension before retiring, Freyer was ordered to Mirzapur. He objected to this temporary posting as he wished to return to Moradabad but the Lieutenant Governor insisted that he must go to Mirzapur. Freyer tried to delay Cameron's arrival in Benares, which provoked a rather stinging reply from Pilcher [P57/117]. Freyer took great exception to this letter, which Pilcher refused to withdraw and on 5 March he sent copies of their correspondence to the Provincial Government but there was no support for his complaint. The first 8 documents are numbered 1-8 [see P57/112-119], copies of these were sent with the letter of 5 March from Freyer to the Government.
