Reader discretion is advised.] Materials pertaining to The Life and Struggles of an Irish Boy in America: An Autobiography by David S. Lawlor. David Lawlor was born in Carrick-on-Suir, County Tipperary in 1865 and lived primarily in Portlaw, County Waterford. He emigrated at age 7 with his family in 1872, settling in Fall River, Massachusetts, where the family worked in the textile mills. The family had also been mill workers in Ireland and Lawlor's autobiography discusses this, as well as going into much detail about the mill work he and his family undertook in America. The text also includes information on the family's hardships in Ireland and decision to emigrate; politics in 19th century Ireland; working class conditions and relations in Fall River; Lawlor's decision to go to school to try and leave the mills; eventual work in advertising and as a reporter for the Fall River Herald and The Globe; transition to selling insurance; the Great Depression; Lawlor's political and religious beliefs are also discussed throughout. Collection includes a typed copy of the autobiography, photocopies of the original published autobiography, Kerby A. Miller's research notes and correspondence, copies of secondary research sources and annotated bibliographic entries, and census research.
