Scope and content
Materials pertaining to David S. Fouhey (1848-1929), a native of Carrigtohill, County Cork who emigrated to Salem, Massachusetts in 1868 and worked variously as a tanner, labourer, and caretaker of reservoirs and roads. In 1977, a collection of eight poems was found in the attic of the home of Robert E. Tivnan, 32 Japonica Street, Salem, Massachusetts. As recalled by Robert, and his brother John F., the poems were composed by their grandfather, David Fouhey. The poems were recited by David and written down by his grandson, David B. Tivnan, in March 1926.
The series includes: Bruce D. Boling's biographical notes on Fouhey; an anthology, A Collection of Poetry compiled in July 1977 by Fouhey's great-grandson John Michael Tivnan; Kerby A. Miller's transcripts of the poems; photocopies of published histories of Salem and Essex County, Massachusetts; and photographs of Fouhey and other family information provided by J. Michael Tivnan.
