Scope and content

[This series contains outdated attitudes or language that does not reflect the current views or positions of the University of Galway Library. Reader discretion is advised.]
The Corr family letters are three letters written by Michael and Mathew Corr in Philadelphia to their sister, Catherine Mallon in Cookstown, County Tyrone in 1891-1892. These letters were originally collected by Arnold Schrier. In his notes, Schrier cites the donor who wrote the following: 'All of the letters are written to the same person, Mrs. Catherine Mallon, two from her brother Michael Corr, one from her brother, Matthew Corr, and one from her nephew, Bernard Mallon [...] Mrs. Catherine Mallon, to whom they [the brothers in America] wrote, was engaged in farming, and lived in Lissan, Co. Tyrone. There may be some record of the Corr family in Lissan. They provided the money for a Catholic Church, called the Corr Memorial Church, in Lissan parish. They also gave the house & farm where they were born, to this parish, and it has been used as a curate's residence. Perhaps it is still so used. Whatever work they did, they made quite a bit of money but it did not bring them any happiness. I don't think any of them -- there was a Bernard, as well as the three mentioned in the letters -- left any descendants in America. The address of the native place of the Corr's and Mrs. Mallon was Lissan, Cookstown, Co. Tyrone.'
The series contains typed transcripts of the letters and photocopies of the originals, along with Arnold Schrier's research notes.
