Scope and content
Copies of documents pertaining to a search to identify the location of a photograph taken by a professor from the University of Cambridge in 1970. Markus Casey was solicited by Rose Desmond, air photograph librarian, to identify the location, which was determined to be a lot in Cahermaculick, a townland northwest of Shrule, County Mayo. Includes:
-correspondence between Desmond and Casey, during which the location of the photograph and archaeological damage incurred at the site has been derived. Casey closes by asking for permission to use the photograph in an archaeological journal to demonstrate the damage of land clearances to archaeological sites (3 February 2003 – 17 February 2003, 5pp);
-letter to Casey from Isabella Mulhall, National Museum of Ireland, stating that she could not find any mention of levelling or destruction of the archaeological complex at Cahermaculick (19 March 2003, 1p);
-printed email correspondence between Cambridge and Casey regarding the £10 fee for publishing the 1970 photograph (19 March 2003 – 26 March 2003, 3pp);
-letter of permission and invoice from University of Cambridge Aerial Photography to Casey for £11.75 for publishing the photograph (26 March 2003, 4pp);
-computer prints of the 1970 photograph (2pp);
-computer print of an aerial photograph of the site taken by Casey (1p).
NOTE: The original documents were heavily water damaged, rendering them unusable. Archived copies were produced to salvage and safely store the information contained within. Portions of the copied documents show where ink heavily leached from the bottom halves of each page of the original documents, resulting in some of the computer-printed photographs being heavily compromised.
