Transcript of an article published in the 29 December 1866 edition of the Londonderry Standard regarding a recent published article in the Waterford Citizen which itself quoted 'from a Roman Catholic journal called the Universal News, containing an extract from a letter written by an Irish emigrant, whom the last mentioned newspaper describes as "One of the purest and best Catholics and Irishmen that ever lived" and in this letter a frightful picture is given of the condition of the ordinary classes of Irish emigrants in the great towns and cities of the United States.'
