Scope and content
Pamphlet containing an address written by General John O’Neill from Windsor Prison in October 1870 to members of the Fenian Brotherhood, plus a handwritten copy of the 7 September 1870 agreement made by O'Neill on behalf of the Fenian Organization with members of a committee appointed at the Ninth National Convention of the Fenian Brotherhood.
O’Neill, imprisoned at the time for leading a failed Fenian invasion of Manitoba, sharply criticises the recent Irish nationalist convention held in Cincinnati and the organisation that emerged from it, the Young United Irishmen, arguing that it lacked genuine representation of Irish nationalist opinion in America. He contends that several prominent figures, including P.W. Dunne, J.W. Fitzgerald, Richard McCloud, and P.J. Meehan, sought to transform the Fenian movement into a vehicle for personal political advancement rather than Irish independence.
O’Neill accuses these individuals of promoting secret organizations, fostering division within the Fenian Brotherhood, and using nationalist rhetoric to conceal political ambitions. He contrasts their activities with what he presents as the Brotherhood’s original mission: preparing for direct action to secure Irish freedom. He also defends the Brotherhood’s system of paid officials and centralized finances, arguing that effective revolutionary organisation requires professional administration and accountability.
A recurring theme is O’Neill’s opposition to political opportunism and his concern that Irish nationalist organisations in the United States were being diverted from their stated objectives. Despite his criticisms, he strongly endorses unity among Irish nationalists. The document concludes with O’Neill announcing an agreement with representatives of John Savage’s Fenian organisation and urging members to support a reunified Brotherhood dedicated to pursuing Irish independence through coordinated action.
