Scope and content
1 original letter and 3 copy letters of correspondence between Peter Freyer, Dr Rice and Sir A Colvin, relating to the Rampur fee. Freyer argues that there was no misrepresentation of his motives in either the European or native press and that a refund of part of the fee might reflect badly on his reputation. He suggests that he forgo any remuneration due to him for services rendered to the Rampur State between Aug 1888 and Jan 1889 (26 Mar 1889). Colvin continued to maintain that Freyer had been greatly overpaid and that there had been injurious comment in a native newspaper. He also says that Freyer could give some of the fee to a charity in India. Freyer regrets that he cannot comply with this suggestion and states that if he is to be debarred in future he will have to retire. (No 12-15)
