Scope and content

From London, to Garbally, Ballinasloe, thanking her for her letter of Tuesday. He is fearful that Robert will not receive his letter from the Admiralty as Robert is in Dublin and the letter will go to Garbally. The letter is the authority by which Robert will be appointed a lieutenant of the Jupiter. He has been assured that Lord Heytesbury and his brother Captain [Edward Henry] A Court, who commands the Jupiter, will courteously receive Robert. There will probably be no news on Dick's proposed purchase for some time. 'Richard Pakenham, I sanguinely hope, will be admitted to return from transportation with promotion in Europe [Richard Pakenham (1797-1868), nephew of the Countess of Clancarty, entered the foreign office on 15 October 1817 as attaché to the Earl of Clancarty, at The Hague. In Dec 1826 he was appointed secretary to the legation in Mexico and became minister plenipotentiary to the united Mexican States on 12 March 1835], if those now in power, shall weather the storm and the events of yesterday evening on the Speakership in the H of Commons, tho' adverse, do not overthrow reasonable expectations on this subject'. He refers to Mr Guinness as a 'fortunate man' who the Archbishop describes as 'worthy of his good fortune' [his niece Harriette Trench married Rev William Newton Guinness on 31 March 1835]. In a postscript he tells her that the plants have arrived from Grace and will travel with him.
