Scope and content

Letter from Emily Bunbury, to Harriette, Garbally, accepting her present [of a book]. She acknowledges that 'you were my first perceptress & I have no disinclination to acknowledge your authority tho' I do not promise a blind obedience. The expression you use with respect to your own religious feelings make me very desirous to know what the change is & what occasion'd it?' As they were taught from the same source she cannot imagine Harriette has 'given into any doctrines different from those which guided our beloved aunt's angelic life'. If Harriette has followed their aunt's example and experienced a spiritual happiness she would like her to tell her about it 'for I am sure I need it more than you do'. She would respect Harriette's opinion second only to her sister [in law] Anne's. Her brother [Henry Napier} has just left after a melancholy visit, Louisa is going to stay with him in Hertfordshire. She and her husband will soon be going to town, staying at Warren's Hotel. Regent St., [London]. She will take the little figure with her and may find someone to bring it to Dublin as it is too heavy 'for mail or coach'. She encloses a letter to be forwarded to Harriette's half-sister Fanny and asks to be remembered to Lord Clancarty and her daughter Louisa. A note at the end reads as follows: 'Barton 16th Jan - Eight and Twenty years today since my dear brother Charles was not killed' [16 Jan 1808 Battle of Corunna at which Charles Napier was declared dead].
