Materials in this catalogue are organised hierarchically and assigned to sub-fonds such as Personal, Academic, or Business papers. These groupings are intended as broad contextual guides rather than strict definitions, and they determine the reference number that is assigned to that particular archive collection (for example A for Academic, P for Personal).

Because many creators’ lives and work do not fit neatly into a single category, some collections include material that might also sit comfortably elsewhere. In some cases, collections that contain academic or literary material have been placed within Personal papers, reflecting how the records were originally grouped or described.

This collection was acquired for the Library in 1990 by Mr Christy Townley, former Librarian of the James Hardiman Library, who had served for many years on the Board of Directors of the theatre. As well as material from the theatre itself, Mr. Townley provided copies of programmes and photographs from his own collection to allow as full a picture as possible of the theatre to emerge. Further transfers of material for later years have taken place from the theatre.

This section contains the minute books and associated material for the meetings of the Board of Directors, who controlled the administration of an Taibhdhearc down through the years. In the early years the committee was also concerned with artistic matters, although financial considerations were always present, and in later years the survival and administration of the company were to the forefront of their deliberations. The first volume and associated enclosures was part of a separate collection donated to the James Hardiman Library by the Ó Briain family, but because it is tied into the beginnings of Taibhdhearc na Gaillimhe it is incorporated into this section.

Bound volume containing minutes of the Choiste na Dramuidheachta Gallimh, giving attendance, correspondence, financial matters and other matters discussed. The first page contains an account of a public meeting held at St. Colman's Hall, giving the names of people elected to the committee. There are also some rough minutes from these early meetings. Includes references to the structural alterations to be made by T Arkins, as well as setting up an Taibhdhearc on a sound financial footing (19 June 1928). Also permission given to Hilton Edwards to bring a piano into the hall (21 July 1928). Also a list of all bills examined by the committee and approved for payment giving the name, amount and for what (3 September 1928). Also "Leigheadh litir ó Lady Gregory ag tabhairt cead Eirghe na Gealeagha a dhéanamh i naisge" (25 Feb 1929) [See also T1/1/1/10]. Letter from the British and Irish Steam Packet Company Ltd., 27 Sir John Rogerson's
Quay, Dublin, to Professor Liam Ó Briain, University College, Galway, replying to his letter of 28th July. They state that they have no knowledge of the Stage Lighting Set being transported, and that they would contact their London office about it.

Letter from Lady Gregory, Abbey Theatre, Dublin, to Mr. O'Brien giving her consent to a production of "Rising of the Moon". "I will charge no royalties for its performance in the Galway theatre". She also asked to be informed of future productions.

Letter from W J Lyon, The Talbot Press, 89 Talbot St., Dublin, to Micheál uasal Mac Liammóir, the Irish Theatre, Galway, asking for royalties due for "An Mhiorbhuilt", which was staged without his permission.

Letter from John McNally & Co. Builders and Contractors, Market St., Galway, to the Committee, Irish Theatre, Galway, proposing to replace the existing fanlight with a newone, with the name of the theatre in gold lettering, for $4-5-0.

Secretaries of Fianna Fáil, Ceann Árus, 34 Sráid na Mainistreach, Íoc, Baile Átha Cliath, to Liam Ó Briain, Runaidhe Onórach, Comhar Dramaidheachta na Gaillimhe, An Taibhdhearc Gaedhilge, An Baile Meadhaonach, Gaillimh, thanking them for the tickets, and stating that Phroinnseas O'Fathaigh TD and Mhicheal O'Cleirigh TD would attend [in Irish].
