DescriptionThe material can be clearly divided into two parts. The first consists of correspondence with David Harkness in 1963 to 1964, when Mr. Harkness was pursuing a doctoral thesis in TCD on the role of the Irish Free State in the Commonwealth from 1922 to 1932, and their correspondence relates to this. The second part of the collection consists of articles and documents relating to the constitutional position of Ireland, mainly in the 1920s. These have been arranged by date of publication.

Administrative HistoryDr. Micheál Rynne was a Captain in the Dublin Brigade, Irish Republican Army during the War of Independence where he participated in the War of Independence. He was also active in the Civil War, where he participated in the bombardment of the Four Courts. He pursued his legal studies during the 1920s, at the end of which he received a doctorate, before returning to the family business in Limerick in 1929. Following his marriage in 1931 he returned to Dublin, where he worked as a legal adviser in the Department of External Affairs.
